‘HTC Wildfire C’ appears in leaked press image
Posted on: April 15th, 2012Looks like HTC may be preparing to bolster its entry-level line up with a new member of the Wildfire family. The image above leaked out today on PocketNow, claiming to show the HTC Wildfire C, previously known by its codename "Golf. A list of purported specs appeared alongside the pic, claiming a 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 4GB of internal storage and a 5MP camera. On the software side, the device apparently runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4. Again, no surprises there.
If the specs are accurate, it looks like this phone will be positioned below the HTC One V, which includes a slightly larger, higher-quality screen. And if the history of the Wildfire name is any indication, we'd carriers to offer the 'Wildfire C' for free on fairly low-cost contracts.

Posted on: April 15th, 2012Drake And Rihanna’s ‘Take Care’ Video: Frozen Planet
Posted on: April 15th, 2012 After years in the wilderness, Drake finally makes a video for the ages.
By James Montgomery
<P>Over the past three years, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a> has risen from <a href="/news/articles/1628425/drake-is-mixtape-dailys-fire-starter-of-the-year.jhtml">mixtape maestro</a> to genuine superstar; the kind of enigmatic talent who can <a href="/news/articles/1672732/drake-take-care.jhtml">proudly embrace his "emotional" side</a> one minute, then release the <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/03/drake-practice-video-take-care/">"Practice" video</a> the next. And in doing so, he has carved out a rather unique niche in the world of hip-hop and R&B — and we're not just talking about his sweaters. Often duplicated, but never replicated, there truly is no one making music quite like him. </P><P> </P><P>And yet, despite all that (and no offense to the wobbly, wonderful "Practice" clip), Drake has never made a truly <i>great</i> music video, or at least one that fits neatly into his maudlin, monochromatic world. Until now, that is. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:721311/cp~vid%3D721311%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A721311" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>On Friday (April 6), Drake finally premiered his long-in-the-works "Take Care" clip. And yes, it was worth the wait. Full of massively icy landscapes, achingly tense slow-motion footage, artfully framed animals and, uh, <i>Rihanna,</i> it is basically Drake personified. Morose and masterful, slow-burning and incredibly sexual (even when it's not supposed to be), it exudes both an incredible level of restraint and an over-the-top amount of pomp. It is very serious, very cold, very pained. Nothing much really happens, but at its conclusion, you feel like you've been through an awful lot (maybe a journey through the mind of Damien Hirst?). None of his contemporaries — not even the ever-obtuse Kanye — make videos like this, mostly because no one else can get away with it. </P><P> </P><P>Directed by Yoann Lemoine — who <a href="/news/articles/1679226/drake-rihanna-take-care-music-video.jhtml">described the video to MTV News</a> back in February as "very minimal" (he wasn't kidding) — "Take Care" smolders with an underlying tension. You <i>feel</i> it in the sinewy slo-mo shots of bulls charging and birds taking flight, the gradual crumbling of icons, the shower of arrows and even the tender, charged embrace Drake and Rihanna share. And in that regard, the clip is also a perfect accompaniment to the track's main bit of source material: Jamie XX's lovely, languorous remix of Gil Scott-Heron's cover of "I'll Take Care of You," which practically <i>burns</i> with want. </P><P> </P><P>And when the drums finally do break through, and Heron's voice is echoing around the room, there is, mercifully, a release — one Lemoine shows with footage of burning trees and smoking earth. All the iciness melts away, and we're left with something even more, something elemental. And you sort of feel like you need a cold shower. </P><P> </P><P>And because of all that, "Take Care" stands head and shoulders above most other videos, regardless of genre. Full of bold imagery and a tugging sense of regret and doubt, it isn't merely art for art's sake (though it's easy to see Drake's detractors dismissing it as such); it's <i>actual</i> art. Welcome to the club, Drizzy; you've finally made one for the ages. Who cares if it's been six months since <i>Take Care</i> was released? In the words of another misunderstood genius — the immortal Jack Horner — "<i>This</i> is the film I want them to remember me by." </P><P> </P><P><i>What did you think of Drake's "Take Care" video? Share your reviews in the comments!</i> </P><P> </P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></center></p>

Rihanna Ends Interview After Love-Life Questions
Posted on: April 15th, 2012 Pop star halts Australian interview when she’s asked about her personal life.
By Kara Warner
<P>If there's one thing to admire about <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a>, it's the way she speaks her mind on sensitive issues. But during a recent interview with a reporter from the Australian talk show <a href="http://youtu.be/Bloo8I0rwhQ" target="_blank">"Sunrise,"</a> RiRi apparently didn't appreciate the line of questioning and abruptly ended their chat. </P><P> </P><P>Because Rihanna was in Australia to promote her upcoming movie <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/435857/moviemain.jhtml">"Battleship,"</a> the conversation began with a discussion about her future in films and whether she'll put her singing career on the back burner in favor of film. "I don't see why I can't do both," she said. "If I love both, then I'll do great at both. I love music, and after my first experience with movies, I can't wait to do more." </P><P> </P><P>One of those potential future films is tackling the coveted role of the late great <a href="/news/articles/1682310/rihanna-whitney-houston-biopic.jhtml">Whitney Houston in an upcoming biopic</a>, which Rihanna said would be a very emotional experience. "She's been someone that I've looked up to for so long," she said. "Her music is something that I've been very close to, so I guess it would be fulfilling as well as … a lot of pressure." </P><P> </P><P>At this point in the interview the reporter brought up Rihanna's public persona and the pressures and frustrations associated with having all your day-to-day activities reported in the news — specifically when tabloids and gossip websites speculate about Rihanna's love life and <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/03/22/rihanna-dating-ashton-kutcher/">link her to other celebs, like Ashton Kutcher</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"[It's] very frustrating," Rihanna said, looking annoyed. "Almost as frustrating as being asked about it." </P><P> </P><P>"Yeah, you don't like going there?" the reporter asked in a diplomatic way. </P><P> </P><P>"I mean, what's the point?" Rihanna responded. </P><P> </P><P>"Well people are interested in you, you're a big star," the reporter added. </P><P> </P><P>"They are. And they're interested in a lot of things — a lot of things that don't matter," said a visibly irritated Rihanna. "Or shouldn't." </P><P> </P><P>The reporter added in voice-over at the end of the piece that the interview abruptly ended after Rihanna's last comment. </P><P> </P><P>This isn't the first time the topic of Rihanna's love life has halted an interview. Last month in London, Rihanna chastised a reporter at a press conference for <a href="/news/articles/1681980/rihanna-ashton-kutcher-not-dating.jhtml">bringing up the Ashton rumors</a>. "Wow, how disappointing was that question?" she asked in response. "I'm happy and I'm single, if that's what you're really asking." </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think about Rihanna's reaction to the personal line of questioning? Let us know in the comments!</i> </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

Rihanna Had ‘Guts To Take Chances’ In Big-Screen Debut
Posted on: April 15th, 2012 ‘There’s probably no more single important skill that you can ask for in an actress,’ ‘Battleship’ director Peter Berg tells MTV News.
By Fallon Prinzivalli
<P>With the much-anticipated <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/435857/moviemain.jhtml">"Battleship"</a> set to release May 18, some are still skeptical as to whether <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> can make a successful transition from music to film. But even in the beginning stages of the movie, director <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/4974/personmain.jhtml">Peter Berg</a> never doubted the pop singer's talent. </P><P> </P><P>"I'm a big believer in musicians-turned-actor," Berg told MTV News, proceeding to list many of the musicians who went on to make it on the big screen. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:755838/cp~vid%3D755838%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A755838" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>"You could do a great MTV special about all the musicians that have acted," he continued. "It starts for me with Frank Sinatra, who won an Oscar for a movie called 'From Here to Eternity.' Mick Jagger was in a film called 'Performance.' David Bowie was in 'The Man Who Fell to Earth.' Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand. Did you see a film called 'Precious'? Mariah Carey — remember how awesome she was in that film? Terrific. Lenny Kravitz. The late <a href="/news/articles/1679045/whitney-houston-death-films.jhtml">Whitney Houston was in a film called 'The Bodyguard.' "</a> </P><P> </P><P>Houston, however, played a musician in "The Bodyguard," which was a role very familiar to her. If the "Talk That Talk" singer were to depict the beloved singer and actress in a <a href="/news/articles/1682310/rihanna-whitney-houston-biopic.jhtml">Whitney Houston biopic</a> — as she told the U.K. Press Association she "would give her entire life to do" — she would no doubt have more experience to draw on than someone who was just an actress. But <a href="/news/articles/1682370/rihanna-battleship-badass.jhtml">Rihanna's role of FBI agent Raikes</a> in "Battleship" is unfamiliar territory. </P><P> </P><P>The thought never worried Berg. "Well, look at Mariah Carey in 'Precious.' I mean, my God, you would never have thought that was Mariah Carey," he said. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:677671/cp~vid%3D677671%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A677671" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>Berg says that what helps musicians as they cross over into acting is that they already have many of the same skills actors possess. </P><P> </P><P>"They're very artistic. They're expressive. They're honest. They're willing to take chances," the director explained. "And I knew from the second I saw Rihanna in her videos that that girl had real charisma. She came in and had a long meeting with me. We just played around, and she really didn't even know what was going on, but what was apparent is that she really has the guts to take chances. There's probably no more single important skill than that, that you can ask for in an actress." </P><P> </P><P><b>Check out everything we've got on <a href="/movies/movie/435857/moviemain.jhtml">"Battleship."</a> </P><P> </P><P>For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit <a href="http://moviesblog.mtv.com/">MTVMoviesBlog.com</a>.</b> </P><P> </P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></center></p>

Professors develop food-magnifying glasses, no need to super size
Posted on: April 15th, 2012Big eyes, small stomach. We’ve all been there at some point, when we load our plate up with more than our tummies can handle. Now, a team of Professors at Tokyo University has created special glasses that magnify the food on your plate, to create the illusion of larger portions, and trick your brain into creating a sensation of fullness. Now this might just sound like “magnifying glasses” but to give it credit, it’s a little smarter than that. The diet-specs house a camera that only expands your nosh (up to fifty percent,) and not your hands. The proof of concept has been backed up by a small group test of 12 people. The subjects consumed 9.3 percent less cookies when magnified, and ate 15 percent more when the treats were set to appear smaller. Certainly these are the wackiest glasses we’ve seen in, oh, over a week.

Drake And Rihanna’s ‘Take Care’ Teaser: Watch It Here!
Posted on: April 15th, 2012 The (musical) couple reunite in eagerly anticipated video to premiere Friday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV.
By Rebecca Thomas
<P>The last time <a href="/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a> and <a href="/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> got together, a quick grocery run for a carton of milk turned into a fun, romantic date over white wine in a sun-drenched Manhattan loft. The cross-genre couple is sharing the screen again, following up Rih's <a href="/news/articles/1652256/rihanna-drake-keep-it-unreal-in-new-whats-my-name-video.jhtml">"What's My Name?"</a> with the video for Drake's "Take Care." But trust us: The mood is different this time around. </P><P> </P><P>While you'll have to wait until Friday at 7:56 p.m. ET for the eagerly anticipated MTV video premiere, MTV News has your exclusive preview! </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:756907/cp~vid%3D756907%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A756907" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>The black-and-white teaser opens with Drake, dressed casually in black tee and matching jeans, looking introspective as he spits the first verse of the moody title track: "I've asked about you and they've told me things/ But my mind didn't change/ I still the feel the same, what's/ A life with no fun, please don't be so ashamed/ I've had mine, you've had yours, we both know." </P><P> </P><P>As Drizzy raps, the (rather majestic) horns of an animal — an ox, a bull? — slide into the foreground, before Rihanna comes into the frame. Seen only in profile, the <a href="/news/articles/1682493/rihanna-chris-brown-reunion-elle.jhtml"><i>Elle</i> magazine cover girl</a> sports some sexy bedhead and a shoulder-baring sweater before those sweeping horns flash back once again. </P><P> </P><P>The 15-second preview closes with an expansive view of a snow-capped hillside, which seems to mirror what director Yoann Lemoine said fans could expect. </P><P> </P><P>"It pays tribute to nature," he told MTV News in February. "When I listened to the track, I was seeing a landscape … involving animals and massive landscapes." Lemoine added cryptically, "It's not narrative at all, <a href="/news/articles/1679226/drake-rihanna-take-care-music-video.jhtml">it involves animals."</a> </P><P> </P><P>Although we don't actually see Drake and Rih together in the teaser, the director behind Katy Perry's "Firework" said he wanted to play up the pair's natural chemistry in the clip. "They seemed to be super close and that's what I wanted for the video," he explained. </P><P> </P><P>The title track from the Young Money star's sophomore effort is a moody interpretation of <a href="/news/articles/1677133/drake-rihanna-take-care-noah-40-shebib.jhtml">Jamie xx's</a> own collaborative reimagining of the late poet Gil Scott-Heron's incomparable <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXPN2dbgu5g" target="_blank">"I'll Take Care of You."</a> Drake's go-to producer Noah "40" Shebib programmed the trance-like drums that kick in after a dreamy hook from Rihanna, which is complemented by residual vocals from Scott-Heron's track. </P><P> </P><P>When we asked the Toronto MC late last year what he had in mind for this video, he said only that he wanted to "make it perfect, like, the best video I've done to date, so just taking my time." </P><P> </P><P><i>Sound off on the "Take Care" teaser in the comments or on our <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews" target="_blank">Facebook</a> page!</i> </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:721311/cp~vid%3D721311%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A721311" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER></p>

Posted on: April 14th, 2012 Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Birdman and DJ Khaled are along for the ride in celebratory clip.
By Kara Warner
<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a> certainly isn't holding back in releasing his new music videos! Minutes before the MTV premiere of the highly anticipated, Rihanna-featuring <a href="/news/articles/1682678/drake-rihanna-take-care-music-video.jhtml">video for "Take Care,"</a> Drake debuted the Lil Wayne-assisted video for "HYFR" on his <a href="http://octobersveryown.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> October's Very Own</a> blog. </P><P> </P><P>As we saw via a few photos from the set recently, the video is a <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/03/23/drake-hyfr-video-recreates-bar-mitzvah/">re-creation of Drizzy's Bar Mitzvah</a>. </P><P> </P><P>The clip opens with footage of a very young Aubrey "Drake" Graham at a friend or relative's Bar Mitzvah years ago. Little Drake says "mazel tov" to camera, and then we cut to the video's introduction, which is printed in white lettering over a black background. "On October 24th 2011 Aubrey 'Drake' Graham chose to get re-Bar Mitzvah'd as a re-commitment to the Jewish religion." </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:721311/cp~vid%3D721311%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A721311" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>We see another few seconds from the archive footage, in which little Drake is busting some moves on the dance floor, looking totally comfortable performing to the camera, before we hear the opening of "HYFR" and cut to Drake dressed to the nines in his freshest bar mitzvah formalwear standing in front of a group of what appear to be his childhood friends — including longtime producer Noah "40" Shebib. </P><P> </P><P>The video takes place in three different settings: The first is the opening shot outside the temple, the Bar Mitzvah ceremony inside the temple and the reception after the ceremony. Over the course of the nearly four-minute clip, we watch Drizzy chillin' with his homies all civilized-like, then we see him going through the motions of the Mitzvah, reciting scripture inside the temple with a rabbi, and then we watch everyone wildin' out at the reception with drinks, dancing and talking to ladies. Decorations and cakes are smashed, and Weezy — who is first shown fully clothed, wearing a panda hat/mask — eventually strips down to just his pants. There are also playful assists/cameos made by Trey Songz, Birdman and DJ Khaled. </P><P> </P><P>Where "Take Care" has a more voyeuristic, contemporary-art feel, "HYFR" is just one big party that we're all invited to watch. </P><P> </P><P><i>Which Drake video do you like best? Share your reviews of the brand-new clips in the comments!</i> </P><P> </P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></center></p>

Death To The Gatekeepers: Bezos Talks Innovation In The Publishing Space
Posted on: April 14th, 2012
The heart of Jeff Bezos’ mission has always to circumvent the traditional “gatekeepers” of commerce. He started with books, an industry ripe for disruption, and moved onto, well, everything else. At this point, his vision has come true. The old gatekeepers in the book sales cycle are on the ropes and electronics companies are already planning to collude in order to maintain a “minimum” accepted price, thereby ensuring Amazon doesn’t eat all of their lunch. But Amazon is hungry and, like Plainview, they have a long straw. They won’t just eat the world’s lunch, they’ll drink its milkshake, too.

Rihanna, Katy Perry Express ‘Inner Crazy’ With Wild Hair
Posted on: April 14th, 2012 ‘There are no rules,’ Perry’s hairstylist, Rita Hazan, tells MTV News of the pop divas’ latest looks.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P>This weekend, two of pop's biggest trendsetters — <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> — debuted some new looks. </P><P> </P><P>Rihanna, who had been rocking a shaggy blond style, <a href="http://instagr.am/p/I3jIUmBM68/" target="_blank">showed off</a> her new black hair. But it wasn't just the color that was eye-catching: RiRi also shaved off the side of her hair, which she was wearing long and wavy. </P><P> </P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><iframe src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:755505/cp~vid%3D755505%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A755505" width="420" height="236" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div> </P><P> </P><P>Perry, meanwhile, went super long. After sporting a <a href="/news/articles/1678155/katy-perry-blue-hair-stylist.jhtml">cropped blue 'do</a> since January, the singer donned a <a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/nickelodeon-kids-choice-awards-2012-orange-carpet/1682187/7028425/photo.jhtml">long blue ponytail</a> with purple highlights when <a href="/news/articles/1682188/katy-perry-kids-choice-awards-performance-2012.jhtml">she hit up the Kids' Choice Awards</a> on Saturday. </P><P> </P><P>But Katy and Rihanna are hardly the only pop stars to rock crazy hair. Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha — who recently attached <a href="http://yfrog.com/odpyeccj" target="_blank">metal studs</a> to her head — are all known for their wild hairstyles. So why are pop stars getting so kooky when it comes to their hair? </P><P> </P><P><a href="/news/articles/1679000/grammys-2012-katy-perry-style.jhtml">Perry's hairstylist, Rita Hazan</a>, explained to MTV News: "Some of the '80s is back, those vibrant colors and neon colors. I think girls are a little more relaxed into bringing their inner self out, their inner crazy. It's not so structured, [like] you have to be pretty and fit into this mold. I love women embracing their inner crazy and making it work for them." </P><P> </P><P>These days, Hazan said, "There are no rules and it doesn't seem like it's organized or styled," adding, "Each person has their own individual personality and they rock [it] and it works for them. It's nice to see women embracing themselves in that way." </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of Katy's and Rihanna's latest looks? Let us know in the comments!</i></p>

Cowon Plenue Z2: US pricing, availability and hands-on impressions
Posted on: April 14th, 2012Just mention the company’s name, and a pair of things come to mind: world-beating sound quality, and above-average prices. Such is life when you’re Cowon, which has informed us that its Plenue Z2 portable media player will be shipping to the US of A in May. Based on details shared to us from a Cowon spokesperson, “early May” is the targeted release window, which makes sense given the unit’s FCC debut back in December of 2011. We’ve learned that it’ll ship in 16GB (white only) and 32GB (black only) sizes, with prices set for $279.99 and $319.99 in order of mention. As for specs? Glad you asked. Rather than relying on one of Cowon’s proprietary operating systems, the Z2 will ship with Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), while measuring 62.8- x 116.5- x 11.8-millimeters, weighing 116 grams and boasting a 3.7-inch (800 x 480) capacitive touchpanel.
On the audio side, you’ll get a typical 20Hz to 20,000Hz frequency range, 29mW + 29mW maximum outlet and a 95dB signal-to-noise ratio. There’s also an HDMI output, a microSD expansion slot, built-in FM radio tuner, 802.11b/g/n WiFi module, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and an internal microphone. The outfit claims that this guy can last some 22 hours when playing back music alone, while video junkies will see 8.5 hours of their favorite Family Guy clips before needing a rejuvenation session. Not surprisingly, the Z2 also supports a smorgasbord of file formats, including AVI, WMV, ASF, MP4, MKV, MPG, DAT, 3GP — tired yet? — DivX, XviD, H.264, WMA, OGG, PMC and FLAC. We managed to grab hold of a unit prior to its launch here in the States; head on past the break to hear our take.

The Other Sinister Plot At Groupon
Posted on: April 14th, 2012
I love Silicon Valley. Love almost everything about the technology ecosystem. I grew up in New Jersey watching with extreme envy and wonderment as the ?95-01 boom-bust played out. Like most, I also share a certain reverence for Steve Jobs. Unfortunately, the Valley tends to indulge in one of the less enviable Jobsian traits: the shithead/hero rollercoaster. People and companies are always one or the other. We glorify when it?s smooth sailing and bash mercilessly during turbulence. Groupon has taken the entire ride. From wonder boy CEO and ?fastest growing company ever? to becoming the evil company out to defraud merchants/investors. Now that I?m no longer directly affiliated with the company (other than being a locked-up shareholder), I thought it would be nice to provide a little balance. There?s plenty that?s been said on the negative side of the ledger ? no doubt inspired by a righteous desire to protect the little-guy merchant and investor and not at all fueled by a desire for twitter followers or endless TV appearances.

Microsoft sets up new subsidiary, would like to meet open source types
Posted on: April 14th, 2012It’s been a mixed bag when it comes to Microsoft and open source involvement, but Redmond’s now getting all enthused, setting up an Open Technologies subsidiary dedicated to making friends in open source circles. While of other parts of the Redmond behemoth will also continue to work on open source projects, this new team of up to 70 internally-recruited staff members will attempt to engage with open source communities “in a more clearly defined manner” across Microsoft’s legion of departments. If this possibly means more off-the-rails Kinect hacks in the future, bring it on.

LG renames Optimus LTE to Optimus True HD LTE, disses Samsung’s HD Super AMOLED
Posted on: April 14th, 2012While the Optimus LTE’s already made its way to South Korea, Japan and the US (in the guise of the Spectrum and the Nitro HD), LG’s decided to give this dual-core handset a new name ahead of its Hong Kong launch at the end of this month. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Optimus True HD LTE. Alas, the “true HD” part here doesn’t actually mean the phone’s getting 1080p resolution on a 4.5-inch panel (which would be 490ppi; yet Toshiba’s actually done it!); but we were told that ’tis really just a dig at Samsung’s HD Super AMOLED technology — you know, the magic behind that 4.65-inch screen on the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S II HD LTE.
Simply put, LG doesn’t think that 1,280 x 720 on PenTile counts as HD due to the lower number of sub-pixels; and while it’s at it, the company also criticized AMOLED’s over-expressed colors and higher power consumption in “normal user environment” — for the latter, LG showed that its AH-IPS has a more consistent power consumption across varying levels of overall whiteness. You can see the relevant slides after the break.
Of course, we’ve already expressed (twice) how much we like the HD Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy Nexus. The clearness issue now is much less noticeable when compared to the original Super AMOLED; but as for color accuracy, many of us are indeed deceived by the vibrancy that we naturally enjoy — except when you need to inspect photos, of course. Regardless, we’re pretty sure that it’s only a matter of time before Samsung strikes back with a, ahem, “true HD” Super AMOLED (Plus) panel — hopefully in time for the upcoming Galaxy S III.

Rihanna Had ‘Guts To Take Chances’ In Big-Screen Debut
Posted on: April 13th, 2012 ‘There’s probably no more single important skill that you can ask for in an actress,’ ‘Battleship’ director Peter Berg tells MTV News.

Readers: What?s Your Cloud Strategy?
Posted on: April 13th, 2012
I get press releases every week about some new (or old!) company and their so-called cloud solution. Some folks are clearly abusing the popularity of the “cloud” buzzword, and others are actually doing interesting things with distributed computing, infrastructure- and platform-as-a-service, orchestration, and related technologies. Amazon is the prime mover on IaaS, but OpenStack, CloudStack and Eucalyptus are all making strong plays in that space. VMware’s Cloud Foundry and Red Hat’s OpenShift are pushing open source PaaS, while services like Heroku, Engine Yard and dotCloud (among others) are pushing to be your hosted PaaS solution. It’s not surprising that so many people are looking to differentiate their cloud solutions, and on the balance I think competition is a good thing that eventually benefits end-users. But as things stand today, it strikes me as exceedingly hard to formulate a comprehensive “cloud strategy” given the plethora of options.

The only people that were under me were people that were deceased — that's kind of how you feel," the fiery New Orleans MC told <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/category/rapfix-live">"RapFix Live"</a> host Sway Calloway on the show Wednesday (March 14). "To come home and be with the #1 rap label? Come on." </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:749261/cp~name%3Dnews%26id%3D1681032%26vid%3D749261%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A749261" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>Mystikal describes the experience as humbling. His <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/03/12/mystikal-original-video-lil-wayne-birdman">"Original" music video</a>, featuring Lil Wayne and Birdman, has already clocked in more than 6 million views on WorldStarHipHop. </P><P> </P><P>In 2004, the former No Limit Records star went to prison on charges of sexual battery, extortion and failing to file tax returns. He was released in 2010, and though he has been working on music ever since, his biggest news came in December when he officially announced his <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2011/12/14/mystikal-confirms-cash-money-deal-debuts-original-lil-wayne-birdman">signing to Cash Money</a>. </P><P> </P><P>Going from behind bars to spitting bars alongside Lil Wayne is quite a feat. "The hardest part was making the transition from everything that I was doing to everything that I was able to do," the Tarantula said of his adjustment from rap star to inmate. "I kinda disconnected from the hip-hop scene, 'cause that was painful, man. To look at TV, like, I wasn't on there." </P><P> </P><P>One of the rappers he would constantly see on the television: Weezy, of course. "That was one you couldn't avoid, that whole camp and Drake and Nicki," he said. "And the whole time, working it out like, 'That's where I'm going anyway.' " </P><P> </P><P><i>Are you looking forward to Mystikal's upcoming Cash Money debut album? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

Coull Buys Agency To Scale Up Its Video Ad Tech In The US
Posted on: April 13th, 2012
Online video advertising is white hot at the moment but a small company based out of the UK has managed to come up with an innovative model. Coull’s technology lets publishers and advertisers tag individual products within videos, making it possible to click through and buy products right from the video. Coull has been doing this for a while, though Wirewax is a new kid on the block doing something similar. The innovative part is that Coull only charges for user engagement with the video, which is unusual in a sector known for charging for anything done with the video. That means budgets get spent on results and not just impressions. Advertisers such as Nike, Renault, Unilever and Agent Provocateur are already users of Coull in Europe. Last year Coull, the video advertising network based out of the UK, closed a large $2m angel round led by Peter Hargreaves (co-founder of Hargreaves Lansdown) who took at 10% stake. It’s since raised an additional $900,000 through new and existing investors and is today acquiring California-based RevUpNet, an established and profitable online marketing agency, for $2 million. RevUpNet is an online-based marketing agency that has strong relationships with publishers, and will act as a way for Coull to enter the US market.

Two new titles hit the Tegra Zone; Demolition Inc. and Jett Tailfin Racers
Posted on: April 13th, 2012There are two new games worth checking out in the Tegra Zone – Demolition Inc. and Jett Tailfin Racers. Both look to offer hours of fun, with 3D graphics and effects you just won't see on any other mobile platform thanks to NVIDIA and their Tegra chips.
Jett Tailfin Racers is an undersea racing game (we'll say it — MarioKart style) where you race through courses filled with things like octopi and sharks who would love nothing more than to end your days, as well as power-ups and boosts. If you're rocking that Tegra 3, you'll also get the bonus of full 1080p graphics and textures, as well as extra animation effects. Jett Tailfin Racers has two huge points going for it, namely USB controller support and multi-player. Using controls that don't suck while playing with your friends across the LAN makes it pure win.
Demolition Inc. is at the other end of the spectrum, and instead of cute racing fishies you take the role of Demolition worker Mike, who happens to be an alien. Fly above six different cities and cause as much mayhem and destruction as you can, using weapons tools like a tractor beam, anti-gravity ramps, and a giant wrecking ball to obliterate houses and other buildings. The THD version (specific for Tegra devices) includes controller support, weather effects, and three exclusive levels. The good news is that the standard version, playable by non-Tegra devices, is coming April 26.
You can get Jett Tailfin Racers for $2.99 in the Google Play store (NVIDIA Tegra devices running Android 2.2 or higher) and Demolition Inc. is $3.99 in the Play store (NVIDIA Tegra devices running Android 2.3 and higher) or grab either through the Tegra Zone app. Be sure to hit the break and checkout the gameplay trailers!

They fit together pretty well, so it was just easy. </P><P> </P><P>"There's a lot of space in the video, and I wanted the visuals to pay tribute to that," he continued. "It pays tribute to nature. When I listened to the track, I was seeing a landscape … involving animals and massive landscapes. I won't say too much, but it's very surprising that there are very few elements in it. It's very simple but there's this big sense of emptiness in it. It's not narrative at all, and it involves animals." </P><P> </P><P><i>What are you expecting from the "Take Care" video?
